Manager: Diego Alonso
Key Player: Darwin Nunez
Best finish: Winners (1930, 1950)
World Cup Group: Portugal, Uruguay, Ghana, South Korea
The quality in this Uruguay squad has perhaps gone under the radar of many fans, Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani have carried La Celeste to at least the quarter finals in two of the last three tournaments and whilst their powers are waning a new generation of talent has emerged.
Darwin Nunez impressed Liverpool enough to dish out £85 million on the talented forward, Champions League winner Federico Valverde anchors the midfield alongside Tottenham’s Rodrigo Bentancur who has shown his quality since coming to the Premier League in January of this year.
The mercurial Suarez and Cavani will surely feature and be a threat but the South American side won’t have to be quite as reliant on them as in past tournaments, there is a really nicely balanced squad that will certainly battle with Portugal for top spot of Group H.
Uruguay should comfortably see off Ghana and South Korea to qualify to the knockout stages and with players who regularly play for some of Europe’s biggest clubs expect them to navigate their way to at least the quarter finals.
