Key Player: Granit Xhaka

Best Finish: Quarterfinal (1934, 1938 and 1954)

2022 World Cup group: Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland, Cameroon

Switzerland is heading to Qatar with an exciting team of players and a group that gives them more than an opportunity to progress. Along with this, they are coming off the back of a strong European championship finish where they reached the quarter-final.

In previous years it would have been all eyes on Xherdan Shaqiri, the Liverpool star is a household name in his nation. He loves to shine at major trophies for his nation with moments that go down in history including but definitely not limited to his spectacular bicycle kick at Euro 2016.

However, with Shaqiri playing in the MLS it’s Granit Xhaka who will lead this team next month. The Gunner is in flying form with table topping Arsenal this season and is an integral part of Mikel Arteta’s team.

This alongside the experience of veteran goalkeeper Yann Sommer this Swiss national team has a great chance of knockout football.

Turning toward their group, Brazil are heavy favourites to get the first position but Switzerland look likely to take second. They have the strength to get past Cameroon and Serbia though neither of these games would ever be described as easy.

Switzerland’s World Cup history has left a lot to be desired for fans, especially in recent times. They haven’t gotten to the quarter-final since 1954 and this is the furthest they have ever gone. With the upcoming World Cup, they’ll be hoping to push on further into the competition.
