Manager: Rob Page

Key Player: Gareth Bale

Best Finish: Quarter Finals 1958 (Lost 1-0 to Brazil)

2022 World Cup Group: England, USA, Iran, Wales

The Welsh will be hoping for similar fortunes in the upcoming World Cup as they have had in the past two European Championships, reaching the semi-finals in Euro 2016 and the Round of 16 in Euro 2020.

Wales have enjoyed a great spell in qualifying for this winter’s tournament under Rob Page, finishing 2nd in a group containing Belgium, Czech Republic, Belarus, and Estonia. This result placed them in a play-off to qualify for the tournament, in which they were drawn against Austria in the first round and the winners of Scotland vs Ukraine in the match to qualify.

They beat Austria 2-1, which then drew them against Ukraine, who had just beaten Scotland 3-1 at Hampden Park. They dispatched of Ukraine via a Gareth Bale free kick which was turned into the Ukraine net by captain Andriy Yarmolenko, sending the Welshmen to their first World Cup in 64 years.

However, key man Gareth Bale is yet to play a full 90 in his quest for fitness at LAFC in the USA, so his overall fitness may be a concern this winter.

The Welsh will be expecting to compete in their group but toppling either England or the USA will prove to be a challenge. However spirits will be high in Wales, so anything is possible, just as we saw in 2016.

Will Wales make it past the Group Stage at Qatar 2022?
