Key Player: Vincent Aboubakar

Best Finish: Italia 1990 (Quarter-finals)

2022 World Cup group: Brazil, Serbia, Switzerland, Cameroon

Missing out in 2018, Cameroon is back in the World Cup. Coming off the back of a 3rd place finish in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, they have the potential to create some upsets.

Vincent Aboubakar will be looking to build on his personal triumph at the previous Africa Cup of Nations where he claimed the Golden Boot Award with an impressive 8 goals.

From an English point of view, Oliver Ntcham (Swansea City midfielder) and Bryan Mbeumo (Brentford winger) are two players on the cusp of going to Qatar, and both play domestically in England.

Looking back at previous World Cup appearances by The Lions, what springs to mind is of course their Italia 1990 run. Entering with impossible odds and a disappointing cup of nations campaign, Cameroon was written off by the world. But a team led by the veteran Roger Miller displayed a brutal style of football which upset Argentina and Maradona’s beautiful game in their first match.

From here on out it was crunching tackles and Milla’s infamous corner flag dance that captivated the world as they pushed onto the quarter-finals. All though this is where their World Cup journey ended, they were all heroes not only for their country but for African football as a whole.
